Willow for energy forests is based on improved, fast-growing willow varieties that are very much at home in the Scandinavian climate. Cuttings are planted in the spring and grow to be 2-3m high trees during a growth season. Forests are typically harvested every three to five years, once the trees have attained a height of 5-12 metres and a diameter of 3-8 cm. Rotation harvesting from the same stumps is expected to be economically viable for 25-30 years. Energy forests can also be combined with the bioconversion of wastewater and sludge, and conservation projects.
