The two establishment methods used both have advantages and disadvantages. The most proven establishment method is to use micro propagated plants. But this is relatively expensive. Cheap and efficient planting can be achieved using rhizomes in the fully automatic Miscanthus planter from Nordic Biomass.

The variety most commonly used for energy and industrial applications is M. x Giganteus, normal crop density is 10,000 - 20,000 plants/ha. Other species, such as M. sinensis, are used in the thatching industry. For thatch production, densities of 20,000 - 25,000 plants/ha are required.
